Prostaglandins and their analogues to be banned in cosmetics

The Omnibus IX draft adds “prostaglandins and their analogues” as a group to Annex II, ending their use in eyelash and eyebrow growth serums.

What changes

Prostaglandin analogues such as isopropyl cloprostenate, ethyl tafluprostamide and methylamido-dihydro-noralfaprostal are used in lash and brow serums to boost growth. In its final opinion of 2 February 2026 (SCCS/1680/25) the SCCS found that they are pharmacologically active even at very low levels, may cause serious eye-related side effects, and that reproductive-toxicity risks could not be ruled out; no safe conditions of use could be set. The draft therefore bans the whole group, not just the three named substances. Brands must reformulate (for example with peptide-based serums); consumers can keep using products they already own, but should stop and seek advice if they notice eye irritation, iris or eyelid darkening, or other changes.
