TPO banned in gel nail products (Omnibus VII)

Since 1 September 2025 the photoinitiator TPO, used in UV-curing gel nail systems, and other newly classified CMR substances are prohibited in all cosmetics, with no sell-off period.

What changes

Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) was allowed up to 5% for professional use in artificial nail systems. After its classification as toxic for reproduction (category 1B) by Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/197, it was moved to Annex II and is now banned. The act also prohibits other newly classified CMR substances, including N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine, an accelerator used in some nail products. Salons and consumers should no longer use gel polishes containing TPO; compliant TPO-free gels are widely available.
