INCI name

ASCORBYL PALMITATE

Vitamin C palmitate

A fat-soluble ester of vitamin C used as an antioxidant.

What it is

Ascorbyl palmitate is an ester of ascorbic acid and palmitic acid. Being oil-soluble, it is used mainly to protect oils and other ingredients in the formula from oxidation.

Where it is used

Found in creams, oils, lip care and make-up.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

It is a different molecule from ascorbic acid; its presence does not mean the product delivers the same effect as a vitamin C serum.

Functions

Antioxidant
Inhibiting reactions promoted by oxygen, thus avoiding oxidation and rancidity.
Fragrance
Imparting an odour or taste. Creating a perceivable pleasant smell and/or masking a bad smell.
