INCI name

CITRIC ACID

Citric acid

Used mainly to adjust pH.

What it is

Citric acid is an organic acid. In cosmetics it is most often used in small amounts to adjust the pH of a formula and to bind metal ions (chelating).

Where it is used

Almost any water-based product; also in some exfoliating products at higher levels.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

When it appears near the end of the list it is usually a pH adjuster, not an exfoliant, but the label alone does not confirm this.

Functions

Buffering
Stabilising the pH of an aqueous medium in a narrow range even if an acid or base is added. Altering and/or maintaining a cosmetic product's pH at the desired level.
Chelating
Forming complexes with metal ions which could affect the stability and/or appearance of cosmetics.
Fragrance
Imparting an odour or taste. Creating a perceivable pleasant smell and/or masking a bad smell.
