A cooling substance from mint.
What it is
Menthol is obtained from peppermint and other mint oils or made synthetically. It activates cold receptors in skin and mucous membranes, giving a cooling sensation, and adds a minty flavour.
Where it is used
Found in toothpastes, mouthwashes, after-sun products, foot creams and shampoos.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
The cooling feeling is a sensory effect and does not by itself indicate any other action.
