INCI name

PHTHALIC ANHYDRIDE/TRIMELLITIC ANHYDRIDE/GLYCOLS COPOLYMER

Phthalic anhydride/trimellitic anhydride/glycols copolymer

A polyester resin used as a film former in nail products.

What it is

Phthalic anhydride/trimellitic anhydride/glycols copolymer is a polyester made from phthalic anhydride, trimellitic anhydride, ethylene glycol and neopentyl glycol. CosIng lists it as a film-forming and viscosity-controlling ingredient.

Where it is used

Found mainly in nail polishes, base coats and top coats.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

It is a polymer and should not be confused with phthalate plasticisers; the label does not show the concentration used.

Functions

Film forming
Producing (upon application) a continuous film on the skin, hair or nails.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
