POLYSILICONE-15 (Polysilicone-15) – function in cosmetics

A silicone-based UV filter regulated in Annex VI.

What it is

Polysilicone-15 is a siloxane polymer carrying benzylidene malonate groups that absorb UVB radiation. CosIng lists it as a light stabiliser, UV absorber and UV filter. In the EU it is listed in Annex VI (UV filters).

Where it is used

Used in sunscreens, day creams with SPF and hair products with UV protection.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

See the EU regulation section for the applicable limits. The label does not show the concentration, and the protection of a product depends on the whole formula.
