INCI name

POTASSIUM COCOYL GLYCINATE

Potassium cocoyl glycinate

An amino acid-based surfactant made from coconut fatty acids and glycine, used for cleansing.

What it is

Potassium cocoyl glycinate is the potassium salt of the condensation product of coconut fatty acids with the amino acid glycine. It is an anionic surfactant. CosIng lists it as a hair-conditioning ingredient and cleansing surfactant.

Where it is used

Found in facial cleansers, cleansing foams, shampoos and shower gels.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The cocoyl group is a mixture of fatty acid chain lengths from coconut oil, so the raw material is not a single compound.

Functions

Hair conditioning
Enhancing the appearance and feel of hair. Leaving the hair easy to comb, supple, soft and shiny and/or imparting volume, lightness, gloss, texture, etc.
Surfactant – cleansing
Wetting body surfaces, emulsifying or solubilizing oils, and suspending soil (generally, such ingredients contribute to the foaming and lathering properties of cleansing products).
