About Axe

Axe is a men's grooming brand owned by Unilever and first launched in France in 1983. In the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and a few other markets it is sold as Lynx because of trademark issues with the Axe name. The range centres on body sprays, deodorants and antiperspirants, shower gels and hair products, usually built around a signature scent such as Black, Apollo or Africa.

Built around scent and spray

Deodorants and shower gels make up the 185 Axe products we list, and the ingredient ranking shows how much the range revolves around signature scents: PARFUM (184), LIMONENE (174) and LINALOOL (165) lead, with the propellant PROPANE (107) in fourth place.

All but one formula declares fragrance (184 of 185, 99%). Denatured alcohol (ALCOHOL DENAT.) appears in 107 products (58%), silicones in 19 (10%), and no formula contains parabens.

Sprays versus gels

In aerosols, gases such as PROPANE drive the spray, and ALCOHOL DENAT. often sits near the top of the list – its position gives a rough idea of how much is used. Shower gels from the same scent line (Black, Apollo, Africa) are built quite differently, so compare a spray with other sprays.
