About Clairol

Clairol is an American hair colour brand founded in 1931 by Joan and Lawrence Gelb. It was owned by Bristol-Myers (later Bristol-Myers Squibb), then by Procter & Gamble from 2001 and by Coty from 2016; today it is part of Wella Company, majority-owned by KKR. In 1965 Clairol introduced Nice 'n Easy, described as the first shampoo-in hair colour.

What a hair colour kit lists

The 12 Clairol products in INCIMondo are hair colourants, and the ingredient ranking shows it: CETEARYL ALCOHOL, a fatty alcohol that thickens creams, leads, followed by SODIUM SULFITE – an antioxidant that stabilises hair-dye formulas – the oxidation dye M-AMINOPHENOL, PARFUM and DISODIUM EDTA.

Every one of the 12 formulas contains fragrance ingredients, and 8 contain silicones. Parabens and denatured alcohol (ALCOHOL DENAT.) appear in none.

Before colouring with Clairol

Oxidation hair dyes must carry specific safety warnings in the EU, and the leaflet describes the allergy test recommended before each use. Dye ingredients such as M-AMINOPHENOL are named individually, so shades can be compared by their lists.
