About Colgate

Colgate is the oral care brand of the US company Colgate-Palmolive, which traces its origins to 1806, when William Colgate set up a starch, soap and candle business in New York City. The company introduced an aromatic toothpaste sold in jars in 1873. Today the group also owns Palmolive, Sanex and elmex.

Inside a Colgate tube

INCIMondo holds 122 Colgate products, essentially toothpastes and mouthwashes. Their recurring ingredients (water aside) read like a toothpaste recipe: SODIUM SACCHARIN for sweetness, HYDRATED SILICA as a mild abrasive and thickener, then CELLULOSE GUM, SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE and AROMA.

Classic cosmetic additives are almost absent. Only 3 of the 122 formulas (2%) contain fragrance ingredients, and none lists parabens, silicones or denatured alcohol (ALCOHOL DENAT.).

Reading toothpaste labels

On a Colgate tube, AROMA is the flavouring, not a perfume. The fluoride compound is named in the ingredient list, and many packs also give the fluoride content in ppm, which makes variants easy to compare.
