Body oils are spread onto the skin, often on slightly damp skin after a shower, or used as a massage medium. Dry oils are formulated to absorb quickly with little residue, whereas richer oils stay on the surface longer. Shimmering versions add light-reflecting particles, and some are also suitable for hair or nails according to the pack.
Plant oils appear under their INCI names, which combine the Latin species name with the plant part: PRUNUS AMYGDALUS DULCIS OIL, SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS SEED OIL, ARGANIA SPINOSA KERNEL OIL or HELIANTHUS ANNUUS SEED OIL. Light esters such as CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, COCO-CAPRYLATE/CAPRATE or ISOPROPYL MYRISTATE make oils feel drier. Mineral-oil based products start with PARAFFINUM LIQUIDUM.
Body oils are usually anhydrous, so the list rarely includes water or emulsifiers, and TOCOPHEROL is often present as an antioxidant. Essential oils listed separately bring their own allergens such as LIMONENE or LINALOOL, which must be declared above 0.001% in leave-on products. Shimmer oils list MICA and CI numbers, and some include UV filters to protect the colour.
