Soaps are used with water to wash the hands, face or body and are rinsed off after lathering. Bar soaps include classic soaps made from fats and alkali as well as syndet bars based on synthetic surfactants; liquid soaps in pump dispensers are mostly used for hand washing and are formulated similarly to shower gels.
In true soap, fats and oils are saponified with an alkali, and the resulting salts are named after their source: SODIUM PALMATE, SODIUM PALM KERNELATE, SODIUM COCOATE, SODIUM OLIVATE or SODIUM TALLOWATE. GLYCERIN forms in the same reaction. Syndet bars use SODIUM COCOYL ISETHIONATE or SODIUM LAUROYL ISETHIONATE, and liquid soaps rely on SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE with COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE.
Some soaps list the starting materials instead, for example OLEA EUROPAEA FRUIT OIL and SODIUM HYDROXIDE, which describes the same chemistry from another angle. TETRASODIUM EDTA or TETRASODIUM ETIDRONATE are often present to bind metal ions, and CI 77891 gives white bars their colour. Soaps are rinse-off products, so the 0.01% allergen threshold applies.
