Shower products are applied to wet skin, lathered by hand or with a sponge and rinsed off straight away. Transparent gels, creamy or pearlescent washes, shower oils that turn milky with water and aerosol foams all belong here. Many are scented and sold in matching lines with body lotions, while others are marketed as unscented or for sensitive skin.
A classic shower gel starts with AQUA, then a primary surfactant such as SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE, SODIUM COCO-SULFATE or SODIUM LAUROYL SARCOSINATE, and a secondary one like COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE or COCO-GLUCOSIDE. SODIUM CHLORIDE is often used to thicken the gel, GLYCOL DISTEARATE gives a pearly look, and polymers such as POLYQUATERNIUM-7 add a smoother feel. Preservatives like SODIUM BENZOATE are common.
Shower products are rinse-off cosmetics, so fragrance allergens must be named when they exceed 0.01%, ten times the threshold for leave-on products. Fragrance and colourants usually sit at the end, after the 1% mark. Shower oils follow a different pattern, starting with plant oils and an oil-soluble surfactant such as LAURETH-4 rather than water.
