“Releases formaldehyde” warning now required on all products

Products with formaldehyde-releasing preservatives must carry the warning “releases formaldehyde” when released formaldehyde exceeds 0.001%; the last sell-off period ended on 31 July 2026.

What changes

Preservatives such as DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, quaternium-15 and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate slowly release formaldehyde, a known skin sensitiser. The old warning “contains formaldehyde” applied only above 0.05%; it has been replaced by “releases formaldehyde”, required when the total formaldehyde released exceeds 0.001% (10 ppm), whether one or several releasers are used. Since 1 August 2026 even older stock without the new warning may no longer be sold. People with a formaldehyde allergy can now rely on this wording on the pack.
