Nano forms of gold, silver, copper, platinum and styrene/acrylates banned

Twelve nanomaterials were added to Annex II and nano-hydroxyapatite was restricted; non-compliant products could no longer be sold from 1 November 2025.

What changes

The SCCS could not confirm the safety of several nanomaterials, so the nano forms of styrene/acrylates copolymer and sodium styrene/acrylates copolymer, copper and colloidal copper, colloidal silver, gold and colloidal gold (including gold thioethylamino hyaluronic acid and acetyl heptapeptide-9 colloidal gold), and platinum and colloidal platinum (including acetyl tetrapeptide-17 colloidal platinum) are now prohibited. Only the nano forms are banned; the same substances in non-nano form are not affected by this act. Nano-hydroxyapatite was restricted to 10% in toothpaste and 0.465% in mouthwash with particle-shape conditions; the Omnibus IX draft proposes to update these limits.
