INCI name

POLYQUATERNIUM-51

Polyquaternium-51

A synthetic phosphorylcholine-type polymer used as a film former.

What it is

Polyquaternium-51 is a copolymer of butyl methacrylate and a methacrylate monomer carrying a phosphorylcholine group (an inner salt with both a positive and a negative charge). CosIng lists it as a film-forming and skin-conditioning ingredient.

Where it is used

Found in creams, serums, eye products, lotions and hair care products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Despite the polyquaternium name, it is not a typical cationic conditioning polymer; the label does not show its molecular weight.

Functions

Film forming
Producing (upon application) a continuous film on the skin, hair or nails.
Skin conditioning
Maintaining the skin in good condition.
