Packaging and what the product is

The Laura Mercier photo shows a slim, black rectangular compact with an embossed “LM” monogram, opened to four square pans – a pale pink, a rosy beige, a shimmering mauve and a deep brown – each also embossed with “LM”. This is the Modern Neutrals edition; the quad holds 6 g in total and costs $59 on the brand site, which also lists other colour stories.

It is a powder eyeshadow palette with matte, satin-pearl and shimmer finishes. The brand claims 16-hour crease- and smudge-proof wear, “zero fallout” and creamy, even application, and says the formula is talc-free with vitamin E and rose oil.

Ingredient analysis

The INCI provided is for the lightest shade (Blanc): mica first, then magnesium myristate, a metallic soap that improves adhesion and the creamy “press”, followed by caprylyl methicone, dimethicone and dimethiconol, silicones that bind the powder and give slip. Triethoxycaprylylsilane and lauroyl lysine are surface treatments that help pigments spread smoothly and stick to the lid. Methylpropanediol, caprylyl glycol, phenylpropanol and sodium dehydroacetate form the preservation system.

Tocopheryl acetate and Rosa moschata seed oil are present in very small amounts and mostly support texture rather than delivering care. The colourants (“may contain”) include titanium dioxide, iron oxides, manganese violet and ultramarines. Other shades in the quad and other editions will have slightly different lists, especially shimmers. There is no talc and no fragrance.

What to watch out for

The formula uses widely used, well-tolerated eye-safe colourants; as with any shimmer, small particles can migrate into the eye, so contact-lens wearers may prefer to apply mattes on the lid. People with sensitive eyes should patch-test new eye products.
