About NIOD
NIOD (Non-Invasive Options in Dermal Science) is a skin care brand of Deciem, founded in 2015 – a year before its better-known sister brand The Ordinary, which Deciem calls NIOD's younger sibling. Estée Lauder, a minority shareholder since 2017, took a majority stake in Deciem in 2021. Products are named with abbreviations; ours include Modulating Glucosides (MG), Copper Amino Isolate Serum (CAIS3), a Superoxide Dismutase enzyme mist (SDEM3) and Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex (MMHC2).
A minimal preservative frame
Our 5 NIOD entries are tagged 'vegan' (3) and 'water based' (2) rather than by product type. GLYCERIN, PHENOXYETHANOL and PROPANEDIOL appear in all 5, then ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, PENTYLENE GLYCOL and CAPRYLYL GLYCOL in 4, and CHLORPHENESIN in 3.
None of the 5 declares fragrance, parabens, silicones or denatured alcohol (ALCOHOL DENAT.).
Decoding the abbreviations
NIOD's codes (MG, CAIS3, MMHC2) are product names, not ingredients – the active substances appear on the INCI list under their own names. Glycols such as PROPANEDIOL and PENTYLENE GLYCOL recur because they act as solvents and support the preservatives in water-based serums.
