A dry shampoo absorbs excess sebum at the roots without water. It is sprayed or sprinkled onto the scalp area, left for a moment and then brushed or massaged through. Most products on the market are aerosols, but powder shakers and non-aerosol pump sprays exist as well, and some versions are tinted to blend with darker hair.
The absorbent part is usually a starch or mineral, for example ORYZA SATIVA STARCH, ZEA MAYS STARCH, ALUMINUM STARCH OCTENYLSUCCINATE, SILICA or KAOLIN. In aerosols, propellants such as BUTANE, ISOBUTANE and PROPANE usually come first in the list because they make up a large share of the can, followed by ALCOHOL DENAT. as a carrier that evaporates quickly.
Because propellants dominate the list in aerosol formats, the order of the remaining ingredients says less about their share of the final powder than it would in a cream. Tinted versions add pigments such as CI 77491 or CI 77499, and many dry shampoos contain PARFUM along with named allergens. Conditioning additions like CETRIMONIUM CHLORIDE or PANTHENOL are less common but do appear.
Aerosol packs carry flammability warnings required for pressurised containers. When comparing powders, it can be useful to see which absorbent is used and whether talc is part of the formula, as some readers prefer to check for it. Pump sprays and powders without propellants show the absorbent much closer to the top of the list, which makes their labels easier to compare.
