Hair masks are rich rinse-off conditioners left on the hair for longer than a standard conditioner, typically a few minutes, sometimes under a towel or cap. They are applied after shampooing to the lengths and ends, then rinsed thoroughly. Many people use them once or twice a week instead of their regular conditioner.
Most masks are thick emulsions built on fatty alcohols such as CETEARYL ALCOHOL or CETYL ALCOHOL combined with cationic conditioning agents like BEHENTRIMONIUM CHLORIDE, CETRIMONIUM CHLORIDE or STEARAMIDOPROPYL DIMETHYLAMINE. These positively charged ingredients cling to the hair surface. Oils and butters such as ARGANIA SPINOSA KERNEL OIL or BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII BUTTER, hydrolysed proteins and PANTHENOL often follow.
Silicones such as DIMETHICONE, AMODIMETHICONE or BIS-AMINOPROPYL DIMETHICONE are common in masks, while other formulas avoid them and use esters or plant oils instead. Neither approach is labelled in a special way, so the INCI list is the only reliable place to check which one a product takes. Some brands state this on the front, but the label is decisive.
When comparing masks, look at the first five or six ingredients: they usually reveal the conditioning system. Ingredients highlighted on the front of the pack sometimes appear much further down the list, below the 1% line where the order is no longer fixed. Preservatives and fragrance allergens are typically listed last.
