INCI name

CYCLODEXTRIN

Cyclodextrin

A ring-shaped sugar molecule that can hold other molecules.

What it is

Cyclodextrin is a cyclic oligosaccharide made of glucose units, obtained from starch by enzymatic conversion; its ring shape lets it host other molecules in its cavity. CosIng lists it as absorbent and chelating.

Where it is used

Found in deodorants, odour-control products, creams, serums and fragrance products, often to encapsulate other ingredients.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Functions

Absorbent
Taking up water- and/or oil-soluble (dissolved or finely dispersed) substances.
Chelating
Forming complexes with metal ions which could affect the stability and/or appearance of cosmetics.
