A carbohydrate fraction from yeast, used as a film-forming and thickening ingredient.
What it is
Yeast beta-glucan is, according to CosIng, a carbohydrate fraction obtained from the hydrolysis of yeast. Beta-glucans are polysaccharides built from glucose units, found in the cell walls of yeasts. CosIng lists it as a film-forming, viscosity-controlling and skin-conditioning ingredient.
Where it is used
Found in a small number of skin care products.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
The INCI name does not show the yeast species or the molecular weight.
Functions
- Film forming
- Producing (upon application) a continuous film on the skin, hair or nails.
- Viscosity controlling
- Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
- Skin conditioning – miscellaneous
- Enhancing the appearance of dry and/or damaged skin by reducing flaking and restoring suppleness.
EU regulation
This ingredient is not listed in the annexes of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 in the CosIng data.
