Ingredient analysis

There is no water, so the formula needs no water-phase preservatives. Pentaerythrityl tetraisostearate, isostearyl isostearate and diisostearyl malate are cushiony, glossy esters; polybutene adds the “jelly” shine and slight tack, and octyldodecanol helps spreading. Polyethylene, candelilla wax, microcrystalline wax and ozokerite give the stick its shape, and VP/hexadecene copolymer helps the film stay on.

Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (octinoxate) and butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane (avobenzone) are UV filters that provide the low SPF. Parfum and aroma (flavour) give the fruity taste and scent, and tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E) is an antioxidant. Depending on shade, the colour comes from iron oxides, titanium dioxide, lakes such as Red 7 and Red 28, and carmine (CI 75470).

What to watch out for

SPF 10 is low protection and not enough on its own for long sun exposure; reapply often or choose a higher-SPF lip product for the beach or mountains. The balm contains fragrance and flavour, which can bother people with sensitive or easily chapped lips. Some shades may contain carmine, which is of insect origin (not vegan) and can rarely trigger allergy. Octinoxate is permitted in the EU up to 10%, but some people prefer to avoid it.
