Face cleansers remove make-up, sunscreen, sebum and everyday dirt. Gels and foams are lathered with water and rinsed, milks are often wiped off or rinsed, and cleansing oils and balms are massaged onto dry skin before emulsifying with water. Some routines use an oil-based cleanser first and a water-based one second, a practice known as double cleansing.
Gels and foams use surfactants such as SODIUM LAUROYL METHYL ISETHIONATE, COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE, SODIUM COCOYL GLYCINATE, DECYL GLUCOSIDE or, less often in facial products, SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE. Cleansing oils are blends of plant oils or esters, for example HELIANTHUS ANNUUS SEED OIL or CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, with an emulsifier like POLYGLYCERYL-4 OLEATE or PEG-20 GLYCERYL TRIISOSTEARATE that lets them rinse away.
Many face washes add humectants such as GLYCERIN, soothing ingredients such as ALLANTOIN, or exfoliating acids like SALICYLIC ACID in products for oily skin. Salicylic acid is regulated in Annex III of the EU Cosmetics Regulation, and products containing it are not intended for children under three, with the exception of shampoos.
Because cleansers are rinsed off, the fragrance allergen threshold is higher than for creams. When comparing products, the first few ingredients after AQUA reveal the surfactant system, while the end of the list shows the preservative, the pH adjuster and any fragrance. Cleansing oils and balms often have no water at all, which changes the preservative picture.
