Exfoliating products remove dead cells from the skin surface in one of two ways. Mechanical scrubs contain particles that are massaged over damp skin and rinsed off. Chemical exfoliants use acids or enzymes and come as gels, liquids, masks or pads; some are rinsed off after a few minutes, others are left on. Instructions usually limit how often they should be used.
Scrub particles appear under names such as JOJOBA ESTERS, SILICA, CELLULOSE, OLEA EUROPAEA SEED POWDER, PRUNUS AMYGDALUS DULCIS SHELL POWDER or SUCROSE. Plastic microbeads are no longer used in rinse-off scrubs sold in the EU, following the 2023 restriction on intentionally added microplastics. Chemical exfoliants list GLYCOLIC ACID, LACTIC ACID, MANDELIC ACID, SALICYLIC ACID, GLUCONOLACTONE or enzymes like PAPAIN and BROMELAIN.
For acid products, the pH and concentration matter, but they are rarely printed on the pack; the INCI list shows which acids are present and in what order, which gives a partial picture. Acids are often paired with buffering agents like SODIUM HYDROXIDE or ARGININE. Many acid exfoliants carry advice to use sun protection, because they can increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun.
When reading the label, also note the base: a scrub may be a cream, a gel or an oil, and that affects how it feels and rinses. Fragrance and preservatives are listed near the end, as in other categories. Products containing salicylic acid also carry the Annex III note that they are not for children under three. Enzyme peels are often sold as powders that are mixed with water just before use.
