Toners & essences – ingredient lists and INCI analysis

Toners are watery liquids applied after cleansing, either with a cotton pad or pressed in with the hands. The term covers several types: classic tonics meant to refresh the skin, hydrating toners and essences with a slightly thicker feel, exfoliating toners with acids, and facial mists sprayed over the face during the day.

Hydrating toners and essences typically contain GLYCERIN, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, PROPANEDIOL, SODIUM HYALURONATE, PANTHENOL, BETAINE or NIACINAMIDE. Some essences are based largely on ferment filtrates, for example GALACTOMYCES FERMENT FILTRATE, which may appear at the very top of the list instead of AQUA. Floral waters such as ROSA DAMASCENA FLOWER WATER or HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA WATER are common in classic tonics.

Exfoliating toners list acids such as GLYCOLIC ACID, LACTIC ACID, SALICYLIC ACID or GLUCONOLACTONE, usually together with a pH adjuster. Some toners contain ALCOHOL or ALCOHOL DENAT., and its position in the list shows how large a share it represents. Witch hazel distillates sometimes contain alcohol as well, which is declared in the INCI list.

As leave-on products, toners declare fragrance allergens from the lower threshold. Preservatives are essential in such water-rich formulas and usually sit near the end, along with chelating agents and pH adjusters like CITRIC ACID or SODIUM CITRATE. Mists in spray bottles sometimes contain propellants or simply rely on a pump. Either way, every component of the liquid is declared, and the INCI list remains the most precise description of what the product contains.
