Face oils are applied in a few drops, either on their own, mixed into a cream or pressed onto the skin as the last step of an evening routine. Some are a single cold-pressed oil, others combine several oils with lightweight esters or squalane to change how quickly they absorb. Most face oils contain no water.
Plant oils are listed by their Latin names, for example ROSA CANINA FRUIT OIL, SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS SEED OIL, ARGANIA SPINOSA KERNEL OIL, PRUNUS AMYGDALUS DULCIS OIL or CANNABIS SATIVA SEED OIL. SQUALANE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, COCO-CAPRYLATE and ISOAMYL LAURATE are frequent in blends because they feel lighter on the skin. Each oil keeps its own INCI name in the list.
Because oils can oxidise, many products contain TOCOPHEROL or ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS LEAF EXTRACT as antioxidants. Anhydrous oils usually do not need a classic preservative. Some face oils contain essential oils, which are listed by their botanical name, and the fragrance allergens that naturally occur in them, such as LINALOOL, LIMONENE or CITRAL, are named on the label when they exceed the threshold.
The order of the oils shows which one forms the base of the blend. An oil prominently named on the front may be the main ingredient or only a small addition; the INCI list makes that clear. Single-oil products often have a one- or two-line ingredient list. The same goes for oil-based serums.
