Purifying cleansing micellar water
Micellar water is a clear cleansing liquid applied on a cotton pad and wiped over the face, often also used on the eyes and lips. Many brands describe it as no-rinse, though some recommend rinsing or following with a toner. Bi-phase versions with an oil layer are also sold under the micellar name and are designed for waterproof make-up.
The name refers to micelles, tiny clusters formed by surfactants in water that pick up oil and make-up. Typical ingredients include POLOXAMER 184, PEG-6 CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC GLYCERIDES, PEG-40 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL, DECYL GLUCOSIDE or COCO-BETAINE, used at low concentrations. HEXYLENE GLYCOL, GLYCERIN or PROPYLENE GLYCOL are frequently present, together with soothing additions such as PANTHENOL or ALLANTOIN.
Because micellar water is mostly AQUA, the ingredient list is often short, and every component below water is used in small amounts. Preservatives are needed and frequently include POLYAMINOPROPYL BIGUANIDE, PHENOXYETHANOL or SODIUM BENZOATE. Chelating agents like DISODIUM EDTA or TRISODIUM ETHYLENEDIAMINE DISUCCINATE support stability. The INCI list therefore stays easy to read even for a first-time reader.
Micellar water is often left on the skin without rinsing, so many readers check it the way they would a leave-on product, looking for PARFUM and named allergens such as LIMONENE or LINALOOL. Fragrance-free micellar waters are widespread, which makes comparing the remaining ingredients fairly straightforward. Bi-phase versions also list oils or silicones.
