A 100 ml hand cream with 5% urea, glycerin, shea butter and lactate in a light emollient base. It is a long-standing favourite for dry, rough hands, with strong ratings on both dm and Wizaż; recent complaints focus on a new cap and a changed scent.

Packaging and what the product is

The official dm photo shows a white 100 ml tube with a pink cap, a soft bubble graphic, a pink “5% Urea” badge, the Balea logo and the words “Urea Handcreme – Akut-Pflege” plus a vegan symbol. Reviewers describe a soft tube that is easy to squeeze when nearly empty.

Ingredient analysis

Urea, at a declared 5%, is the key humectant and softening agent, supported by glycerin, sodium lactate and lactic acid – components of the skin’s natural moisturising factor. Ethylhexyl stearate, dicaprylyl ether, coco-caprylate and shea butter give a fairly rich yet absorbent feel, with cetearyl alcohol, pentaerythrityl distearate and sodium stearoyl glutamate building the emulsion. Tocopherol and tocopheryl acetate are antioxidants. Phenoxyethanol, caprylyl glycol and decylene glycol preserve it.

What to watch out for

Urea can sting on cracked or broken skin, particularly at first. The fragrance includes declared allergens citronellol and anise alcohol, plus cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) oil and the woody aroma chemical tetramethyl acetyloctahydronaphthalenes. People with fragrance sensitivity may prefer an unscented urea cream.

Users with very dry, cracked or frequently washed hands describe quick relief, soft hands and fast absorption without a greasy layer; several have repurchased it for years, and some compare it favourably with pharmacy brands. Recent dm reviews criticise a new cap that is hard to use and, in one case, a scent that now smells plasticky.

People with dry, rough or chapped hands who want an affordable, vegan urea cream for daily use. Those with open cracks may find urea stings, and fragrance-sensitive users should look for a perfume-free version.
