Our review

A tinted lip balm in a slim bullet, built on silicones, an ester emollient and waxes, with argan oil, mango butter, a little hyaluronate and fragrance, for a soft-matte, blurred finish. Reviews are positive about texture, comfort and shades; price for a small amount and some transfer are the main caveats.

Packaging and what the product is

The Hourglass photo shows a slim champagne-gold tube with “HOURGLASS” printed vertically in black and a black upper section, with the bullet exposed in the peachy-nude shade Spell beside a creamy swatch. The brand’s FAQ says the bullet does not retract. Cult Beauty lists it at 1.7 g, and the line comes in six shades.

It is a tinted balm meant to enhance natural lip colour with buildable, soft-matte colour. The brand claims it blurs lip lines, feels non-drying and keeps lips nourished for up to 12 hours, and lists it as vegan and cruelty-free.

Ingredient analysis

The INCI provided starts with dimethicone and phenyl trimethicone, which give slip and a soft sheen, followed by tridecyl trimellitate, a cushiony ester, and dimethicone crosspolymer, the silicone gel responsible for the blurring, soft-focus effect. Synthetic wax and tribehenin give structure to the bullet; polyglyceryl-2 triisostearate and diisostearyl malate are emollients that help pigments disperse and add comfort.

Argan oil and mango seed butter are present but after the water, so in modest amounts; star anise fruit extract, hydroxystearic acid and polyhydroxystearic acid also appear. The list we were given ends at polyhydroxystearic acid; the full list on hourglasscosmetics.com continues with polysilicone-11, propanediol, sodium hyaluronate, synthetic fluorphlogopite, vanillin and shade-dependent colourants such as Red 7 Lake, Yellow 6 Lake, Red 33 Lake, iron oxides and titanium dioxide. Preservation relies on 1,2-hexanediol and caprylyl glycol. Fragrance is listed.

What to watch out for

Fragrance and vanillin can bother people with sensitive or easily chapped lips, and star anise extract is a plant ingredient that very occasionally irritates. The brand itself notes slight transfer because of the soft-matte, nourishing finish.

Colourants and therefore the exact list vary by shade, so check the shade you buy.

On hourglasscosmetics.com the balm had 4.5/5 from 64 reviews (checked 1 Nov 2026). On Cult Beauty it had 4.6/5 from 13 reviews (checked 1 Nov 2026); reviewers describe a smooth, luxurious, buttery texture, a soft blurred look that is not drying, pretty, easy-to-wear shades and good longevity.

The recurring complaint is value: several Cult Beauty reviewers love the formula but say there is very little product for the price, and one was unsure about a shade chosen online without testing.

Who it may suit

People who like easy, low-maintenance lip colour with a soft-matte, smoothing effect and do not mind a fragranced, premium-priced product. Those with very sensitive lips or fragrance intolerance, or who want truly transfer-proof colour, may prefer something else.
