The quoted photo from tolpa.pl shows the 8 ml single-use sachet of the “tołpa. dermo face enzyme. peeling 3 enzymy”, decorated with papaya and pineapple and naming papain, bromelain and “keratolina”. The same peel is sold in a larger tube; the 8 ml sachet is essentially a trial size. It is a gel applied to clean skin, left on for a few minutes and rinsed off.

Ingredient analysis

The formula is short. After water and glycerin comes Papain, the protein-digesting enzyme from papaya, then Sodium Polyacrylate (thickener), Peat Extract and parfum, followed by Bromelain from pineapple and Bacillus Ferment – the third “enzyme” that the brand presents as keratolin. These enzymes loosen the bonds between dead surface cells, so the peel works without abrasive grains.

Xanthan gum adds body, glyceryl caprylate and triethyl citrate are skin-conditioning and deodorising helpers, and the product is preserved with potassium sorbate and benzoic acid plus caprylyl glycol and methylpropanediol. Sodium phytate is a chelator.

What to watch out for

Enzymes can cause redness or a burning feeling in some people, especially on broken or freshly treated skin; a patch test is sensible the first time. It contains parfum. Using it more often than the 1–2 times a week that reviewers typically mention, or on the same day as acids or retinoids, raises the risk of irritation. Papain and bromelain are proteins, so people with known sensitivity to them should avoid it.
