Packaging and what the product is

The Australian Gold photo shows a black, contoured plastic bottle with a bronze trigger-style spray pump, the koala logo, “Instant Bronzer 15” in large bronze-and-white lettering over a palm-leaf pattern and a gold band reading “Water Resistant (80 minutes)”. It holds 8 fl oz (237 ml).

It is a body sunscreen with an immediate, temporary bronze tint. The brand describes it as a hybrid of continuous spray and lotion, broad spectrum, water resistant for 80 minutes, vegan and PETA-approved, and says not to spray directly onto the face but to apply via the hands.

Ingredient analysis

The US label lists the UV filters separately as active ingredients: avobenzone 2% (UVA), octisalate 5% and octocrylene 2% (UVB, with octocrylene also helping to stabilise avobenzone). The INCI we analysed is the inactive part. It opens with water, aloe juice and glycerin, followed by butylphthalimide and isopropylphthalimide – solvents and film formers used in spray sunscreens to dissolve the filters (despite the name, they are not phthalate plasticisers). Caramel is the bronzing colourant that washes off with soap and water.

Two acrylate polymers, dimethicone and trimethylsiloxysilicate help the film stay on the skin for the water-resistance claim; carbomer-type crosspolymer and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose thicken the gel. Sunflower and olive oils and tocopheryl acetate add emollience, tea tree leaf oil appears near the end, and preservation relies on phenoxyethanol with ethylhexylglycerin. Fragrance is listed without individual allergens on the US page.

What to watch out for

SPF 15 is below the SPF 30 that many dermatology bodies recommend for extended time outdoors, and the bronzer does not add protection – the colour can make skin look protected when it is not. Apply generously and reapply as the label says (after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, after towelling, at least every two hours).

Fragrance and tea tree oil can irritate or sensitise reactive skin; octocrylene is an uncommon but known photoallergen. The tint can transfer to swimwear and towels. Formulas sold in the UK/EU may use different filters, so check the label of the version you buy.

On Target the spray gel had 4.6/5 from 523 reviews, with 77% recommending it (checked 1 Nov 2026). Reviewers praise easy blending, value, instant golden colour, a light non-greasy feel and the scent; complaints include sunburn despite use, a clogging or awkward nozzle, a smell some find too strong, occasional stickiness and bronzer transferring to clothes.

On medino’s REVIEWS.co.uk page the UK 237 ml version had 4.9 from 16 reviews (checked 1 Nov 2026); buyers liked the tan, absorption and “holiday” smell, and one mentioned caps damaged in transit.

Who it may suit

Adults with skin that tolerates fragrance who want a light-protection body sunscreen with instant colour for short or moderate sun exposure, and who are disciplined about reapplying. People who burn easily, those with fragrance or tea-tree sensitivity, and anyone needing face protection should choose a higher-SPF, unscented product.
