Our review

A glossy lip oil on a mineral oil and polybutene base with hemp seed oil and aloe, sweetened with saccharin and tinted yellow with CI 19140 – more a cosmetic gloss than a treatment.

Packaging and what the product is

Nani Lip Oil is listed on Bell’s website as part of a summer collection (the image file is named “Aloha Manawa”); we could not load the product photo from the server, so we do not quote it here. Lip oils of this type usually come in a small tube with a doe-foot applicator.

Ingredient analysis

The base is Paraffinum Liquidum (mineral oil) with Polybutene – a classic combination that gives high shine and a slightly cushiony feel. Octyldodecanol, diisostearyl malate and isopropyl palmitate are emollients, and Silica Dimethyl Silylate with two styrene copolymers thickens the oil so it stays on the lips.

Cannabis Sativa (hemp) seed oil, castor oil and aloe extract are the “care” ingredients; their amounts are moderate. Sodium Saccharin gives a sweet taste, and BHT plus pentaerythrityl tetra-di-t-butyl hydroxyhydrocinnamate protect the oils from oxidation.

What to watch out for

The colour comes from CI 19140, a yellow lake of tartrazine – a permitted colorant in EU cosmetics; a small number of people are sensitive to it. The product contains parfum. Hemp seed oil does not contain the psychoactive compounds of the plant.
