Packaging and what the product is

The Open Beauty Facts photo shows a white screw-top jar held in a hand, with an orange-and-yellow label reading “PALMER'S Shea Butter Formula”, “Raw Shea Nourish Body Balm” and a “BONUS! 30% more free” banner. US retailers list the jar at 7.25 oz. It is a solid balm for very dry areas of the body.

Ingredient analysis

Shea butter is the first ingredient, followed by soybean, canola and sunflower seed oils. Microcrystalline wax and ozokerite give the balm its firm texture; coconut oil and cocoa seed butter add richness, and tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E) is the only “active” beyond the butters and oils.

Because the formula contains no water, it needs no conventional preservative. Benzyl alcohol appears at the end together with the fragrance allergens.

What to watch out for

The fragrance comes with four declared allergens: benzyl benzoate, benzyl salicylate, hexyl cinnamal and benzyl alcohol. People with fragrance allergies, or who use it on broken or eczema-prone skin, should bear that in mind. Very occlusive balms can feel heavy and may not suit acne-prone areas.
