Anwen Grow Us Tender (formerly sold as Grow Me Tender) is a 150 ml leave-on herbal scalp lotion (“wcierka”); reviewers describe a bottle with a spray atomiser, which makes application to the scalp easier. It is marketed as a warming lotion for the scalp and hair-growth support.

Ingredient analysis

The base is water with polysorbate 20, which solubilises the oily components. Fenugreek seed extract and radish root extract come next, followed by hydrolysed soy protein, propanediol, glycerin and panthenol. Zinc PCA, glucose, ornithine HCl, niacinamide and arginine HCl form a group of scalp-conditioning ingredients, with onion extract and biotin further down.

The warming sensation comes from vanillyl butyl ether, and field mint (Mentha arvensis) leaf oil adds freshness. Polyquaternium-11 is a light film former. The preservative system is extensive: salicylic acid, sorbic acid, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, benzoic acid and benzyl alcohol. A fragrance with declared limonene and linalool completes the list.

What to watch out for

Vanillyl butyl ether and mint oil can cause stinging or redness on a sensitive scalp; a patch test is sensible and the lotion should not be used on irritated or broken skin. Salicylic acid is a regulated preservative in the EU. Sudden or patchy hair loss has many possible causes and should be checked by a doctor; a cosmetic lotion is not a treatment.

Recurring criticisms concern the smell – several find it unpleasant, one compares it to broth – and the fact that it can weigh hair down, so some only use it before washing. A few users found it too strong and irritating for their scalp, and one describes a strong allergic-type reaction after which she stopped using it.
