1 NG Neutral Gold is a light shade with a neutral-golden undertone at the lightest end of the range. KIKO describes the formula as medium-to-high buildable coverage, matte, transfer-proof and resistant to water, sweat and humidity for up to 24 hours, and lists it as non-comedogenic and dermatologically tested.

Ingredient analysis

The first ingredient is barley stem water (Hordeum vulgare), used instead of plain water as the main aqueous phase. Isododecane, undecane and tridecane are volatile hydrocarbons that evaporate after application and help the film set; dimethicone gives slip, and trimethylsiloxysilicate is a silicone resin that forms a flexible, long-wear film. Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 dimethicone emulsifies this water-in-silicone system, silica and two dimethicone crosspolymers absorb oil and soften the look of pores, and sodium chloride and magnesium sulfate stabilise the emulsion.

For comfort there are glycerin, pentylene glycol, saccharide isomerate, sodium hyaluronate and a little sodium ascorbyl phosphate and tocopherol, all at modest levels. Pigments are titanium dioxide and iron oxides, coated with triethoxycaprylylsilane. Preservation uses phenoxyethanol, sodium dehydroacetate, benzoic acid, dehydroacetic acid, potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate. No fragrance is listed.

What to watch out for

Formulas of this type, rich in volatile solvents and film-forming resins, can feel tight on very dry or flaky skin and usually need an oil- or bi-phase cleanser to remove. The barley-derived base may matter to people who prefer to avoid cereal-derived ingredients. The preservative mix is broad but uses common, permitted substances.

Because the shade is very light, check the undertone in daylight before buying online.

Buyers praise strong coverage, all-day wear, a light texture, no oxidation and a natural, non-shiny finish; one German reviewer even found it suitable for dry skin.

The negative reviews we read were about shade choice: one buyer said the shade picked with the app was far too dark, another that the shade was much too light. We did not find a larger independent set of reviews on other retail sites.
