Packaging and what the product is

The manufacturer’s photo shows a black jar with a gold label reading “Nanoil Hair Mask – Charcoal & White Clay”, staged next to pieces of charcoal. It is a rinse-off conditioning mask from Nanoil’s hair mask range.

Ingredient analysis

The conditioning core is cetearyl alcohol with Cetrimonium Chloride (a cationic surfactant that detangles and reduces static) and Silicone Quaternium-16, a conditioning silicone that binds to damaged areas of the hair. Glycerin, panthenol and hydrolysed sericin (a silk protein) add moisture and smoothness.

The theme of the mask comes from Charcoal Powder (activated carbon) and Kaolin (white clay), which can adsorb oil and residues, and from Porphyra umbilicalis (red seaweed) extract. Retinyl palmitate, tocopherol and linoleic acid are present in small amounts.

What to watch out for

The mask is preserved with Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI). In the EU they are allowed only in rinse-off products and at very low concentrations, but they are frequent contact allergens – people with a known MI allergy should avoid this product. It also contains parfum with benzyl salicylate, limonene and hexyl cinnamal. Rinse thoroughly and avoid contact with the eyes.

Who it may suit

Normal to oily hair or scalps that like a light, detangling mask with a “clean” feel. Not for people allergic to MI/MCI or sensitive to fragrance.
