The lirene.com image shows a white 150 ml tube standing on its flip-top cap, with the vertical “Lirene Dermoprogram” logo, an orange slice, mint leaves and bubbles, and the text “Cleansing clay paste with bamboo, mint and orange – intense cleansing and refreshment, unclogs skin pores, all skin types” in several languages. It is a rinse-off face cleanser; the brand says it gently exfoliates dead skin cells and removes excess sebum.

Ingredient analysis

Kaolin, a white clay, is second on the list and gives the paste its body and oil-absorbing, lightly polishing effect. Cleansing comes from the relatively mild cocamidopropyl betaine and coco-glucoside, with acrylates copolymer and PEG-120 methyl glucose trioleate thickening and glycerin, panthenol and hydrogenated starch hydrolysate cushioning the skin.

Zinc gluconate is often used in products for oily skin, and peppermint leaf, orange fruit, bamboo shoot, lotus flower and water-lily root extracts are the botanicals. Triethanolamine adjusts the pH. Preservation combines methylparaben, benzyl alcohol and methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone; fragrance includes tetramethyl acetyloctahydronaphthalenes and linalyl acetate.

What to watch out for

Methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI) is a well-known contact allergen; in the EU it is permitted only in rinse-off products at low concentration, which this is, but people already sensitised to it should avoid the paste. It also contains alcohol denat., parfum and peppermint, which can tingle on reactive skin. Avoid the eye area and do not over-scrub.

Most reviewers like the dense, creamy paste, its fresh, slightly minty scent, and skin that feels clean, refreshed and smoother; several with combination or oily skin say it handles excess sebum and blackheads, it rarely irritates, it is economical and the tube is convenient. Some also use it as a brief mask.

Criticisms: the texture is too thick for some and spreads stiffly, it barely foams and needs a lot of water to rinse, and the cleansing and freshness are described by a few as mild and short-lived; one reviewer felt it did nothing. Several bought it cheaply near its expiry date, and one thought it had been discontinued, though the brand’s site still listed it when checked.

Who it may suit

Normal, combination or oily skin that likes a clay cleanser with a gentle polishing effect. Not suitable for anyone allergic to MCI/MI, and very dry or sensitive skin may prefer a softer cream cleanser.
