Our review

A pink clay mask built on kaolin and bentonite, with coffee extract, papain and a blend of essential oils. Reviews are very positive about the clean, smooth feel; the essential-oil scent and dryness on some skins are the main caveats.

Packaging and what the product is

The photo on caudalie.com shows a dark green squeeze tube with a flip cap, the white “CAUDALIE” logo and “Masque Instant Détox / Instant Detox Mask”, 75 ml. Caudalie places it in its Vinoclean range and suggests applying it twice a week and rinsing after about 10 minutes.

Ingredient analysis

Water, kaolin and bentonite make up the base – two absorbent clays – with glycerin, acacia and xanthan gums for texture. The pink colour comes from iron oxides (CI 77491, CI 77499). Further down are grape fruit extract, arabica and robusta coffee seed extracts and papain, a papaya enzyme with mild exfoliating action.

The scent comes from essential oils rather than a separate parfum: bergamot, lavender, cypress, clary sage, myrrh, sandalwood, Roman chamomile and parsley seed. Preservation relies on benzyl alcohol, sodium dehydroacetate/dehydroacetic acid, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate; alcohol appears in eighth place.

What to watch out for

Limonene and linalool are declared, and the essential-oil blend may bother fragrance-sensitive skin. Papain is a protein-digesting enzyme and can sting irritated skin. Clays can feel drying on dry skin, so follow with a moisturiser and keep the mask away from the eyes.

Reviewers often describe skin that feels clean, soft and smooth, less oiliness and pores that look tighter; several like the colour and the herbal, “French pharmacy” smell.

Less enthusiastic reviewers say pink clay is too drying for them, are unsure about the promised effects or would not repurchase. Many LOOKFANTASTIC reviews are short, multilingual comments about cleanliness and softness.

Who it may suit

Normal, combination and oily skin types that like a weekly clay mask and tolerate essential oils. Dry or reactive skin, or anyone avoiding fragrance allergens, may prefer a fragrance-free clay mask.
