Packaging and what the product is

The photo on olaplex.com shows a white airless pump bottle labelled “OLAPLEX Nº.6 Bond Smoother”, “leave-in styling treatment” and “100 mL / 3.3 fl. oz.”. It is a cream applied to damp hair before drying and left in, aimed at smoothing and taming frizz.

Ingredient analysis

This is a classic conditioning-cream base: water, cetearyl alcohol, dimethicone, the volatile emollients isohexadecane and isododecane, coco-caprylate and phenyl trimethicone, with behentrimonium chloride and cetrimonium chloride as cationic conditioners. Bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate – the brand's signature “bond building” ingredient – sits in eleventh place, just before the fragrance.

Lower down come small amounts of hydroxypropyl guar, a hydrolysed vegetable protein silanetriol, sunflower and grape seed oils, aloe, panthenol, seaweed extracts and tocopherol. Preservation uses phenoxyethanol, iodopropynyl butylcarbamate (IPBC), potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate.

What to watch out for

The fragrance is declared together with seven allergens: hexyl cinnamal, limonene, citral, linalool, citronellol, hydroxycitronellal and geraniol. IPBC is an EU-regulated preservative with concentration limits for leave-on products and is not allowed in lip products. Anyone with a known fragrance or preservative allergy should check the list and keep the cream off the scalp and face.

Who it may suit
