Our review

A refill pouch of Molton Brown’s fresh, woody-marine body wash: a classic SLES/betaine gel with glycerin, cypress, sea fennel and honeysuckle extracts, a strong fragrance and colourants. Users love the scent and the lower-waste refill format; as a conventional foaming gel it is not especially moisturising and is not the first choice for sensitive skin.

Packaging and what the product is

The moltonbrown.com photo shows a matt white stand-up pouch with a white screw spout at the top corner, printed with the Molton Brown London logo and “Coastal Cypress & Sea Fennel – Bath & Shower Gel Refill”. It holds 400 ml (13.5 fl oz) and is meant for refilling the brand’s 300 ml bottle or its refillable glass bottle; the US site listed it at $46 (checked 1 Nov 2026). The brand states the formula is vegan.

Ingredient analysis

The cleansing base is sodium laureth sulfate with cocamidopropyl betaine and coco-glucoside, a standard, rich-lathering combination. Laureth-7 citrate, glycerin and polyquaternium-7 make the foam feel softer on the skin, and sodium chloride and PEG-150 pentaerythrityl tetrastearate thicken the gel. Callitris columellaris (cypress pine) leaf/wood extract, Crithmum maritimum (sea fennel) extract and two honeysuckle extracts are the featured botanicals, present after the fragrance.

Fragrance appears high in the list, followed by the declared allergens limonene, alpha-isomethyl ionone and linalool. Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane and ethylhexyl salicylate are UV filters that protect the coloured gel in its packaging rather than the skin. Benzyl alcohol, phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate and sorbic acid preserve; tetrasodium glutamate diacetate and sodium phytate are chelators; Blue 1, Red 33 and Yellow 5 colour the gel.

What to watch out for

SLES is an effective but more stripping surfactant than glucoside-only washes; people with very dry skin or eczema may find it drying, especially with hot water or long baths. The prominent fragrance and its allergens can irritate sensitive skin or trigger reactions in people with fragrance allergy. Keep out of the eyes and rinse thoroughly. Using it as a bubble bath for young children is not advisable given the fragrance level.

On moltonbrown.com the refill page showed an average of 4.91/5 from 239 reviews (checked 1 Nov 2026), though this is the brand’s own site. On Cult Beauty the 400 ml refill had 2 reviews, both 5/5: buyers love the fresh scent, say it reminds them of a seaside holiday and note the refill is better value; one has repurchased it several times. We found no critical reviews of the refill itself, but the sample on independent sites is very small.

Who it may suit

People who enjoy fresh, woody-aquatic fragrances, already own a Molton Brown bottle and want to cut packaging waste. Those with dry, sensitive or eczema-prone skin, or who avoid fragrance and sulfates, will be better served by a milder, unscented wash.
